Most offices use a startling amount of paper – more accurately, they waste shocking quantities.
According to the EPA, the U.S. uses about 70 million tons of paper and paperboard each year, with office workers using four million tons of copy paper, or 10,000 sheets annually. In fact, the daily use for U.S. office workers is approximately two pounds of paper and paperboard products. No wonder the recycle bins are usually overflowing!
Clearly, the impact on America’s forests is startling. That’s why it’s good to know that there are alternatives to paper made from high conservation-value old growth forests. For example, Mohawk makes paper from post-consumer and virgin hardwood and softwood fiber pulps. In 2010, Mohawk used over 23,000 tons of postconsumer fiber, essentially saving 552,000 trees.
At LaserCycle USA, we take a slightly different approach – in partnership with our customers, we plant trees to offset the amount of paper used during the year. This is our Paper Offset Program and involves planting trees in local burn areas devastated by forest fires. In Colorado where pine beetles have decimated the forests, we also plant trees in those areas.
We also have a certification program that honors customers for their recycling accomplishments.
