So, despite what the large manufacturers might say in order to keep people buying new cartridges, properly remanufactured toner cartridges will not damage a copy machine or printer.
These “drill-and-fill” operations do not produce quality remanufactured toner cartridges. A “split-hopper” cartridge is another type of remanufactured toner cartridge that may not provide consistent performance. When the toner hopper is split during the remanufacturing process, clips must be installed to secure the halves back together. Clips may become loose or fall off when the cartridge is in use, causing the printer to jam or result in other problems.
Worn or defective parts are replaced, and the cartridge is cleaned, refilled, and reassembled. Toner cartridges can be remanufactured up to four times if produced according to LaserCycle USA’s industry-leading quality standards. As a result, the positive environmental impact can be substantial.
The manufacturing process for producing a new laser toner cartridge releases .01 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, far more than LaserCycle USA’s remanufacturing process using recycled toner cartridges. Accordingly, when you choose to use remanufactured laser toner cartridges, you reduce air pollution, greenhouse gases and you help to minimize the amount of materials disposed of in landfills. You also conserve natural resources by eliminating the need for virgin materials used to make new cartridges.
Sadly, most used cartridges end up in landfills in the U.S. or overseas, where it will take centuries for some parts to fully decompose. Worse than the environmental impact is the human cost: many cartridges end up in cities like Guiyu, China, where they are incinerated or dissolved with hazardous chemicals to extract residual metals. These processes contaminate the local air, soil and groundwater.
Using remanufactured toner cartridges also saves energy. Approximately three quarts of oil are burned in the production of a single new toner cartridge. A used toner cartridge can be remanufactured up to four times, depending on its type and condition, thus potentially saving up to 12 quarts of fuel.
